Little Mezotne palace

History

Mežotne is an old and famous settlement located 10 km west of Bauska. This place was formed on the left bank of the Lielupe River, where the Žemaitija – Mežotne – Riga road crossed the river and where the Mežotne mound and Vīnakalns still rise today. Already at the end of the 1st millennium, an ancient city was located between the two mountains. The steep Mežotne mound, the largest mound in Eastern Zemgale, was the center of Upmale county in the 9th-13th centuries. This fortified mound was protected by high ramparts and moats, and archaeological excavations have found 14 buildings and 3,604 antiquities.

Small Mezotne palace is located on the banks of Lielupe and is one of the buildings of the Mežotne palace complex. Completely restored and renovated, the palace combines the style of the Age of Discovery with modern comfort, creating a special aura of mystery that meets today’s requirements.

The first thing that strikes you when you enter the palace is the grand foyer, surrounded by dolomite walls, with a solid wooden staircase and a second-floor balcony.  Slightly mystical lighting, original ceiling decorations and a crystal chandelier give the room a unique atmosphere. On the first floor of the palace there is a spacious banquet hall, dining room and kitchen, while on the second floor there is a library and guest bedrooms, each decorated in its own unique style.

Various concerts, exhibitions and art plein airs are regularly held in the palace and its surroundings, giving the place a lively and creative spirit.
